ALRIGHT Y'ALL -- Let's fundraise and give some much needed love to our district and amazing core lit curriculum! Earlier this evening, a concerned citizen was, um, concerned, that I was going to create a snow storm of money raining down on the district to help raise funds so that the teachers who would like to teach "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian" would have the opportunity to do so. WHO WANTS TO HELP ME? I'd love to share an update at the next school board meeting in November! HERE'S HOW WE DO IT: I received this information from trusted people within the district who helped advise on the best process for schools receiving donations:
A group called "Parents for a Diverse Curriculum" has been formed to raise funds so the schools can purchase copies of the book. They hope to raise just over $11,000 so that a sufficient number of copies can be purchased at all three schools. They reached out to me to help make the community aware of their efforts and I'd love to toss my support behind them. I verified this process earlier through people within the school district. The English Department chairs at all three high schools -- Lora Novak at Westlake, Christy Hodson at Newbury Park, and Jon Fleming at Thousand Oaks -- ask that donations be sent directly to the three schools. You may send a donation to one school, or separate gifts to all three. (Donations are tax deductible.) Your check should be made out to the relevant school, with a note reading “DONATION TO ENGLISH DEPARTMENT.” Here are the addresses to which checks should be sent (or they can be dropped off in the schools’ main offices): Lora Novak Westlake High School 100 Lakeview Canyon Road Thousand Oaks, CA 91362 Christy Hodson Newbury Park High School 456 N Reino Road Newbury Park, CA 91320 Jon Fleming Thousand Oaks High School 2323 N. Moorpark Road Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 **************************************************************************** If you send in a check, please message me and let me know. I will have a WONDERFUL HALLOWEEN COSTUME IF this post helps the group hit their half-way mark ($5,500). Do it for our concerned citizen! Do it for my Halloween costume. But mostly, let's not lose focus.... do it because we are passionate about supporting a diverse core literature, rich with different experiences and stories that our children can learn from. We have a lot of teachers in our district who are passionate in their desire to teach this book... let's help them make that happen.
