It's approximately 1 hour and 12 minutes until we're due for a bounce house birthday party. I'm not showered. AB is... well.... she's at least dressed. I also don't have a gift for the birthday girl... yet. Just like last week for school's Earth Day potluck, when I ended up picking up a large package of string cheeses the morning of, and dropping it off with her teacher who I bumped into in the Starbucks line. That seems to be my life lately, and for someone who generally considers herself a very organized person... you'd think it'd bother me more. I mean, it's not for lack of trying or not caring. It's just those hours, I don't know where they poof to. Between work, a nonprofit, volunteering, weekend chores, and family time... I just don't seem to have time to catch up, even when I'm given plenty of notice. This birthday party this morning is not a "surprise" event to me, and still I'm left with... where'd the time go?!
During Easter, I kept thinking we'd have this day of egg decorating crafts and all the things moms do with their children to bring the magic of the day alive. The Monday after Easter weekend, I dropped off the egg decorating kits, eggs, and AB with Grandma while I headed off to work. At least she got to decorate eggs, right?! Next week is teacher appreciation week, and I want to get AB's teachers something. It's Saturday Morning. I'd have "all weekend." Something tells me I'll end up buying Starbucks gift cards on Monday morning. Which brings me to my next point. "Pinterest Moms." I adore you. I know you get teased because your perfect cupcakes and beautifully hand-decorated personalized mugs are simply wonders to behold, but I adore you for them. You have the time, or at least find the time to make the effort to make things feel beautiful and special... and in doing so, you allow some of us other moms who find themselves crawling through the week and smashed up against the clock, to get a little slack. I don't have a gift ready today, but I know you'll show up in-hand with something marvelously wrapped. For Teacher Appreciation Week, you'll be the one to bring in amazing little trinkets that took you visits to the craft store, a glue gun, and superb wrapping skills. The pictures of you baking treats on IG are masterpieces. You've got something for every occasion. It's what you excel at. And I thank you. I didn't get blessed with the crafty or creative gene. I'm thrilled when the tissue I shove in a bag looks like it has some volume. And, I was never meant to make reindeer cupcakes... and that's where you come in. So, thank you. My fumbling lack of a reason for not showing up to a birthday party with a gift, and feeble declarations of heading to the mall later today to find the perfect one, will be overshadowed by your A-game. Don't ever let anyone knock you down for it. And now, I gotta shower. And figure out how to get to this party on time.
